Local dishes: In keeping with its richly mixed heritage, Trinidad and Tobago has a huge variety of food, from Italian, Chinese, Indian, Arab, and Creole. One of the most popular snacks is the Roti, an envelope of unleavened bread with a filling from anything from curry shrimp to lentils. Batter snacks include phulori, split peas in batter balls. Sweet dishes include pamie, sweet coconut in a pattie or wrapped in a banana leaf and pone (cassava flour, sugar and coconut).

From December, for two months of the year, waves are usually the biggest attraction in the area, a 10 minute walk from Mt Irvine Beach a favourite with surfers worldwide, where there are kayaks and motorized sea-craft to rent.

Turtle Watching

Tobago is a very important nesting ground for the leatherback turtle. The largest species of marine turtles, the leatherback comes ashore in the nesting season (March to August) to lay its eggs on Turtle Beach, Back Bay and Grafton Beach. Leatherbacks are endangered; therefore turtle-watching tours must be undertaken with certified tour guide.

Marriage regulations for a special licence:

  • Both parties must be non-residents of Trinidad or Tobago
  • They must reside in Tobago 3 days prior to marrying
  • If divorced, original or notarized copy of decree absolute
  • If widowed, original death certificate of spouse
  • Proof of name change when name differs on documents
  • Persons under the age of 18 must have documented consent from a parent or legal guardian
  • The licence costs TT$337.50 (US$55) paid in cash at the Inland Revenue Department in Scarborough.
